Aveley has a mix of post-war council-built houses, 1960s estates and newer homes, and a lot of them have tired pebbledash, painted sand and cement, or bare brick that owners want to modernise. Silicone render is the most popular way to do it.

Silicone render is a thin, through-coloured finish. The colour runs all the way through, so it never needs painting, and the silicone makes it water-repellent, so rain runs off and carries dirt with it. That is why a silicone-rendered house in Aveley stays cleaner for longer than a painted one.

The finish is only as good as what is underneath it. The wall is prepared first, with loose render removed and cracks repaired. A basecoat with reinforcing mesh goes on next, which spreads movement and stops cracks telegraphing through to the finish.

Beads are fixed at corners, window reveals and the base of the wall. They give crisp, straight edges and a drip at the bottom so water is thrown clear of the wall rather than soaking into the bottom edge.

Aveley sits close to the Thames and open ground, so walls can take a lot of wind-driven rain. A water-repellent finish with a proper base detail is exactly what an exposed elevation needs.

Silicone render has to go on in the right weather - not in frost, heavy rain or strong direct sun - so the job is scheduled around the forecast and each elevation is finished in one go to avoid visible joins.

Colours are chosen from a sample chart and seen on the wall in daylight before the order is placed, because a shade looks different on a whole house than on a small swatch. Photos of each elevation, and close-ups of any cracks, stains or hollow patches, are enough to say what the wall needs.
